Garrahan Hospital Workers Face Charges After 61% Salary Increase

After winning a 61% salary increase, health workers at Buenos Aires' Garrahan Hospital are now facing disciplinary charges and accusations of 'coercion' from a government-appointed administrator, whom they call an act of retaliation.

Garrahan Hospital Workers Face Charges After 61% Salary Increase

Workers at the Garrahan Hospital, led by the Professional and Technical Association (APyT), have denounced that after achieving a 61% salary increase following months of protests, the administrator appointed by Minister Lugones has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Norma Lezana and other workers. They are accused of 'coercion, resistance to authority and usurpation' (sic) for protests held at the hospital. 'This individual, Mariano Pirozzo, who is not a pediatrician and was trained at a private military hospital, never agreed to meet with the representatives of APyT and other organizations that led the protest, and now intends to sanction and even fire Norma and other professionals,' they stated. The hospital's leader expressed: 'Frankly, from Lugones and Pirozzo, we expect anything. The administrator, appointed by Health Minister Mario Lugones, has initiated a series of disciplinary proceedings against Norma Lezana and other Garrahan Hospital staff.' She added: 'Honestly, after having to admit, after denying it for nearly a year, that we were right, this is now complemented by this incredible retaliation: they accuse us of almost being terrorists for demanding to be received by the hospital's management.' Lezana concluded: 'Obviously, we will respond on all fronts—administrative, judicial, and by appealing to the social solidarity that has allowed us to make our claim visible all this time, because it is evident that the attack against the spokespeople of the movement to defend the hospital we built is to launch new attacks later.' This Thursday at 4 PM, a 'Open Town Hall of Organizations and Families' will be held at the hospital to collectively evaluate the next steps.
